SALCOS® - Our transformation programme for a sustainable future
Since 2015, the Salzgitter Group, together with partners from industry and research, has been on the path to virtually climate-neutral steel production. The core of the programme is the switch from coal-based steel production to hydrogen-powered direct reduction plants and electricity from renewable sources. By the end of 2033, we will be technically able to reduce our CO2 emissions by around 95 per cent.

Leading the transformation with SALCOS® green steel products
The SALCOS® brand stands for physically CO2-reduced green steel products from the Salzgitter Group with a clear brand promise and transparent product characteristics. It is the strong result of our vision to transform the industry together with our customers and make a real contribution to decarbonisation. Green steel products can already be sourced from the Group's electric arc route. Steel products from the transformation programme of the same name will follow from 2026. In the extensive SALCOS® product portfolio, Mannesmann offers a wide range of high-quality, physically CO2-reduced pipes for the complex requirements of sustainable solutions and demanding applications of our customers. These include welded and seamless precision pipes, HFI-welded medium line pipes and spiral-welded large-diameter pipes.

Continued process chain development for sustainable products
We constantly evaluate our processes and scout for new technologies to minimize emissions from our production.
One prime example is the change of burners in Mannesmann Precision Tubes’ furnaces, in which the structure and mechanical-technological properties of steel tubes are specifically adjusted. With iRecu®, our partner Kueppers Solutions has developed a pioneering technology whose market launch was supported by Mannesmann Precision Tubes as one of the first users in the ongoing production process.
The manufacturing of the burner components using 3D printing enables particularly efficient heat transfer through optimized gas/air flow which alone reduces natural gas consumption by approx. 15 %. Even greater emission savings can be realized in the future through the possible dual-fuel operation which enables the substitution of natural gas by hydrogen - without the need of another plant conversion.

Environmental impact assessments for transparency and improvement evaluation
Depending on the requirements of the markets we supply, we use different assessment methods and documentation to evaluate our environmental impact, in particular greenhouse gas emissions.
This provides an important basis for prioritising and taking measures to reduce emissions.

Mannesmann Precision Tubes GmbH tracks the greenhouse gas emissions of its corporate activities and supply chain with a corporate carbon footprint. If required, product carbon footprints can be provided.

Based on market requirements and the needs of our customers, we are able to provide a detailed PCF. We provide the complete data situation of the purchased goods - from "cradle to gate". Not only for CO2-reduced products, but also for "grey" material. In this way, we contribute to great transparency in the data situation.

Mannesmann Line Pipe provides Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). They include all relevant environmental product information.
Sustainable Research & Development
The path to net zero in our industry has a wide variety of technical challenges. From steel composition to manufacturing processes and testing regimes there are many areas of unchartered territory. Thanks to various R&D activities in the different companies and a large network of trusted R&D-partners we are ready to fill all technical gaps. The centre of this network however is Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung, the preeminent steel research facility for 90 years. The two research facilities in Salzgitter and Duisburg offer broad expertise supported by cutting-edge experimental infrastructure.
Security in steel supply for a resilient energy infrastructure
Security in steel supply for a resilient energy infrastructure The green industrial revolution is expected to unfold at a rapid pace, surpassing the speed of previous transformations. This, coupled with an increasingly unstable geopolitical landscape, has brought supply security to the forefront of many major investment decisions. Mannesmann, as part of Salzgitter AG, is one of the few integrated suppliers of pipes and tubes in Europe, positioning us to play a significant role in this revolution. Below we want to share a number of projects in which speed and exact execution of the requirements were paramount in securing the supply of natural gas to Germany.
